Student and Youth Congress of Burma

Introduction

The Students and Youth Congress of Burma (SYCB) is an umbrella organization of students and youth organizations of various ethnic backgrounds. Its members come from all different regions of Burma. The SYCB is based on the Thai-Burmese border and Indo-Burma border, and it was established on January 8th, 1996, in New Delhi. The SYCB aims to increase and promote understanding and cooperation among the many different ethnic nationalities of Burma and their youth and students organizations. It also struggles for the reinstatement of democracy, the restoration of human rights, and the establishment of a federal union in Burma.

In this time of struggle, the SYCB works to gather ideas, to build trust and mutual understanding, to build the skills of its members, and to acquire knowledge about the best way to bring about the political, economical and social reconstruction of the country.

Who We Are

The SYCB consists of eleven students and youth organizations from the Thailand-Burma border and Indo-Burma border, and it represents different ethnic nationalities of Burma. The following organizations are members of the SYCB:

• Democratic Party for a New Society (DPNS)
• Kuki Students Democratic Front (KSDF)
• Karen Youth Organization (KYO)
• Mon Youth Progressive Organization (MYPO)
• National League for Democracy-Liberated Area (Youth) - (NLD.L.A. Youth)
• Pa O Youth Organization (PYO)
• Kayan New Generation Youth(KNGY)
• Tavoy Youth Organization (TYO)
• T'aung Student Youth Organization
• Arakan League for Democracy (Exile) Youth (ALD-Youth)
• Naga Youth Organization (NYO)
• Zomi Students and Youth Organization(ZSYO)

Aims & Objectives

1. To strengthen the capacity of the students and youth organizations of Burma
2. To increase understanding and co-operation among the organizations in their fight against the military regime in Burma
3. To build mutual trust among various nationalities of youth for the foundation of the future federal union of Burma

Past Accomplishments and Activities

In order to reach its aims and objectives, the organization has done a number of activities and produced a regular publication, "SYCB Bulletin", as well as occasional booklets. It holds regular meetings among member organizations. During the last two years, it has successfully organized many seminars, workshops, trainings, meetings and conferences.
