Doothahtu District

Location

Doothahtu also knowns as Thaton is adjacent to Klerlwehtoo, Mutraw, Pegu and Mon State. It is one of the important district for Karen people for having the territory that could access to the sea at Gulf of Martaban.

General Youth Situation

Youth from Doothahtu district face many obstacles such as lack of education, work opportunities, extortion, forced labour, forced relocation, and poor health care.

There are multiple ethnic groups staying in this district such as Karen, Mon and Burmese etc. To get higher education youth have to leave their family and go to the city or travel to the border to study in refugee camps. The district is separately controlled by multiple armed groups such as SPDC, KNLA and DKBA and lots of human rights violations occur in this area.

KYO Activities

There are 5 townships under the district and there are (447) members. Currently there are 44 active members working for KYO in this district. We provide trainings to equip youth with skills. We travel around Doothahtu District organizing communities at the village and township levels. At the same time we try to document human rights violations within the district.

How you can help youth from Doothahtu

Youth in Doothahtu District set up a student hostel in Kwee Lay village to help young people from the district to get better and higher education. Due to the limitation of the funding and situated in a remote location inside Karen State we could only help 25 students who are able to stay in the hostel. Each year we need 170,050 Baht (4,860 US$) to support the students. We provide School fee, Text book, Household Implements, Curry, Candles, Garlic, Onion, Salt, Chilli, Beans, Fish-paste, MSG, Oil, Rice, Personal Needs such as Soap, toothbrush, shampoo, etc.

If you want to support the youth in Kwee Lay Boarding house please see more information here
